About Mark
I'm a London-based keyboard player who's spent most of his life in rehearsal rooms, studios and on stage.
Pop, rock, soul, funk and electronic. Garage bands, original records, covers nights and weddings. These days all of that goes into live, dep and session work, making sure the keys are right so the band sounds as good as it can.
I started piano at eight and went on to pass Grade 8. That gave me the foundations, but most of what I actually know came from playing in bands, making records and gigging.
Piano, Hammond, Rhodes, synths and synth bass. I've played the lot, and each one taught me something the others didn't.
A garage band, and a great place to start. We released material through Detour Records and got airplay from John Peel and Steve Lamacq on BBC Radio 1.
A band I formed. We supported The Darkness, then got involved in an artist-development project with former Duran Duran management.
Formed after I moved to London. I co-wrote the material and covered keys, synths and synth bass live. We put out an EP and a single, and played Download Festival and Camden Crawl.
An electronic rock project I formed and produced myself. A run of singles on Lucida Records, with airplay on the BBC Radio 1 Rock Show.
Turn up prepared, listen to the band and play what the music needs.
Alongside the original bands, I've built up a big covers repertoire across pop, rock, soul, funk and dance, and played plenty of weddings and live events along the way.
What I take most pride in is getting the arrangement right, not a rough version of it, and picking up new material fast when the setlist changes.
My focus now is live, dep and session keyboard work. And honestly, my favourite part happens before the gig.
Getting under the skin of an arrangement. Rebuilding the right sounds. Working out how a keys part, or a stack of studio production, is best going to translate to the stage.
I'm as happy at a piano as I am building a synth patch, or tucked away at the back of the stage making the whole thing sound bigger. Whichever it is, you get someone who's done the homework and is listening to the band.
